Ceramic, magnetic or glass: which whiteboard should you buy?

Ceramic, magnetic or glass: which whiteboard should you buy?

Whiteboards look alike in photos, but the writing surface decides how long the board stays clean. Here is how the three main types compare.

1. Ceramic steel (E3)

A porcelain layer fused onto steel at over 800°C. It never ghosts, resists scratches and is magnetic. Best for: schools, coaching centres and any board used every day.

2. Magnetic coated steel (RC)

A painted steel surface that is smooth and magnetic but softer than ceramic. Best for: offices and homes with moderate use, on a budget.

3. Toughened glass

Glass is non-porous, so ink can never soak in. It looks premium and lasts practically forever. Best for: boardrooms, cabins and modern offices.

Our recommendation

  • Classrooms: ceramic steel 4 x 6 ft or 4 x 8 ft
  • Meeting rooms: magnetic glass board
  • Home study: combination board or RC magnetic board
